In my old home office I was using an old Powermac G5 running Tiger (not server) as a local fileserver, connected to our network via a gigabit switch. I was able to work directly on files off the server - pretty big photos, Photoshop documents, zipping/unzipping files - with very little perceived slowness due to working over the network. In my new "real" office we are using an Iomega Storcenter IX2 and I'm connecting to it via a Cisco gigabit switch. Performance seems much slower - longer to mount volumes, longer to transfer files, and working on live files they are slower to open and save....

For your iBook G4, I would suggest that you look at a book that shows information up to OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Keep in mind that model will be AT LEAST 8 years old, is very challenging to repair, and is dramatically different hardware, compared to that on more current models. The OS X software, however, will look and work the same on any Mac of that vintage, depending on the OS X version in use. Keep in mind that the iBook will limit you somewhat with how much RAM memory can be used, as there's only one memory slot.

According to Mactracker, the iBook came out in 1999 with OS 8. Buy accordingly.

This may not fully answer your question, but did note that iMovie 11 does not support full HD--1080p. I did a quick search on this a LONG time ago when I noticed--we are talking about three years ago--when iMovie utterly failed to synch video with sound. Oddly enough, the older version did a better job. Anyways, this complaint: That thread is worth a read. Anyways, the solution I have is, unfortunately, $$$. I have Premier Pro which will handle the video just fine. You can then export into HD quality that will play nicely with either "old" QuickTime--save that program!--or VLC. I...

I recently bought a Canon S100 camera that shoots HD video and took it on a vacation trip. This was my first experience with HD video. The camera produces video in .mov format at 1080p. The clips have been culled and copied to files on the hard drive, where they play perfectly well at full size in Quicktime. When imported into iMovie HD 6.03, however, iMovie HD converts them to standard definition. I have gone over and over all the iMovie settings and can't find a reason why iMovie HD won't accept these as HD videos. The only thing I have thought of is that the camera is using a codec that...

I was able to recover the mac.com password by answering the security questions. The problem was that my idea of which was my favorite car changed over the years. That, and the fact that the correct favorite was a 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder, which can be represented by a half-dozen variants of the name. Thanks for helping.

From my research, using the Firewire adaptor in OS X does not need a driver. Using a USB adaptor is iffy and not reliable.

@Cheryl That Macupdate link attempts connecting to an ftp server, probably at Castlewood (which is long gone), and eventually times out. I found another couple of software download sites, which also try for that same ftp link. I've not had any luck discovering working links to download the Orb tools installer. I think your hint about trying a SCSI to FW adapter in 10.4 for retrieving files may work, but I certainly don't have an Orb drive. Some older threads describe removing certain adaptec drivers, and restarting with the Orb drive attached. Could be that 10.4 does not need that mod...

Yes, there is a solution. One solution is a .olm to .pst convertor. This thread has a couple of different ones. http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/322201-switch-back-windows-platform.html#post1527338 (It still makes me wonder why Microsoft makes it so challenging to go from Outlook on one platform to Outlook on another. Seems to me Microsoft should provide tools for that. Another Microsoft support thread, with some other possible hints: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macoutlook/convert-olm-files-to-pst/7f5e4fe5-7a91-41de-8240-a46a0b214cbe

Have you tried this one: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/4442/castlewood-orb-tools-driver Castlewood is out of business, but there are people who are still using the drive. In fact, some have success in 10.4 with a SCSI to FW adapter.

If you select a file, then click somewhere outside of that window, the file remains selected, but is just not in focus. If you click on that already-selected file, the system may still hold that first click, and another click registers as a second click, even though it's several seconds later. (Not saying that's correct behavior, but might explain what's happening) Trackpad? Mouse? If trackpad, is that the built-in one on a MacBook, or a wireless Magic trackpad? Go into your System preferences, then Mouse, or Trackpad prefs. Make sure that "double-click speed" is NOT at either extreme. ...

I recently started having this problem. When I browse through different image/video files, some of the files get open with one click only. This is really very annoying. I am event thinking to migrate back to Windows because of this problem. How to reproduce the issue: -> Open a folder that contains many images/video files -> Click on anyone of them to select it -> Now click outside the window. So, the finder goes out of the focus (but should stay visible) -> Now, inside finder click any other image/video just once, it will open up automatically with just single click

Which HP 4210 do you have? There's a C4210, and an F4210, and maybe 2 or 3 other HP models that all have the number 4210 as part of the model number. What version of OS X do you have? Have you checked for updates to Apple's HP drivers? Is your printer USB only, or is there also an ethernet (network) connection? If USB only, does the printer finish a page when the printer is plugged directly into the USB port on your MBAir? I'm asking that to find out if it ALWAYS fails to print a full page, or only when plugged into the USB port on the TC?
