Have you tried "restore"? 9 times out of 10 this fixes most problems - assuming your computer can see it. (The iPod software updater should be in your utilities folder - try downloading the latest from Apple)

Otherwise try select & menu and then straight away (when the apple appears) select & play/pause. This should get it into disk mode, and you might be able to restore it from there.
