I'm having the same problem with my girlfriends iBook using 10.4.8. The airport finds the network, gets an IP and everything else but applications can't connect to the internet. I have my PowerBook using 10.4.9 right beside it and have no difficulty connecting to a public wireless network. Did you ever find a solution? I'm hoping an update to 10.4.9 will solve the problem.
