Similar thing happened to my MacBook, the delete, tab and space bar would not work. The keys did not register in the keyboard viewer but they worked when i clicked the respective keys in the Viewer.
Hardware defect... I just received a new keyboard for my MacBook, it was only 6 months old.
Did you try reseting the PRAM... that was one option i had tried! But i've had mixed reviews on it... there are strings in the forums on it!
Is it only TextEdit that is not behaving? What about Word, or entering an address in your browser?
