| Yes, I've also had intermittent problems similar to the ones you describe with Mail in Leopard. Mostly, Mail used to take on the order or 5 minutes to load, I couldn't apple-tab to it (had to click the Dock icon) and I couldn't quit it either.
It magically fixed itself though. I know this sounds silly, but try repairing your permissions. That's the magic bullet for half of problems on OS X in my experience...
