| Do you have a new mac ? Older macs might have a problem with e.g. USB 2.0.
Also try the drive on another system and check if it is still okay (if not, maybe a bad cable or worse as jccarley suggests).
Try another USB port on the mac (not through a hub, but directly on the mac). Take off any other equipment from the USB ports.
