How long are some of the names on the files? XP did like long file names. Try a test with a short file name then withy a long file name.
Plus did you read Giaguara's How to make your Mac OS X recognize, read, and write to NTFS volumes..
One last thing, if you are going to keep a Mac in a Windows network always keep the web site MacWindows.com handy.
