Running Illustrator 8 on Mac OS X 10.4.11

Hey there! I've been a user of Adobe Photoshop forever, and assumed that since I could install an older version of PS (version 7) on my Mac OS X 10.4.11 that an older version of Illustrator would work as well.

I tried calling Adobe, but - as per usual in most places - the person I spoke with was fairly clueless... obviously reading an answer off of a script. They said that Adobe Illustrator 8 wouldn't work with OS X. I found this thread here: Illustrator File previews

That thread clearly states that someone has 8 working on an OS X system (10.4.8 is the lastest mentioned, which is darn close enough!).

However, when I try to run the installation program on my disc, I get this:

"You cannot open the application 'Install Adobe Illustrator' because it is not supported on this system."

I'm a fairly new Mac user, and so I thought I'd ask here how exactly I would go about getting this installation to work. If I ask Adobe, they are obviously going to try to get me to buy CS3, which they state is the only one which will work with OS X 10.XX - but this obviously isn't true. Is there anyone that can help me?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Edit: Oh, also... forgot to clarify that I DO have the MAC version of Adobe Illustrator 8.0.1 (that's what it says on the disc)... just in case someone thought I was stupid and trying to install a Windows version
