Changing the extension is just a name change. It does not magically change a file's contents.
Pages documents are not files. They are bundles somewhat like MacOS X applications. If you want to send a document created in
Pages to a colleague, then you must export it in a format that your colleague can open. When your document is complete, select the
File>Export... menu item. It gives you the option of exporting to .pdf, .doc, .rtf, or .txt.
