How, exactly, are you trying to access the Mac on the other side of the room? Via the "Connect to Server..." option, via the "Shared" sidebar Finder option, or some other method? With what protocol are you trying to connect (AFP, FTP, SMB, etc.)?
If both machines are running Mac OS X, then there is no reason to use the outdated, chatty and slow AppleTalk protocol (AFP is not AppleTalk, by the way).
