This may seem like a silly question nuttyuser, but when you write that you changed the iTunes folder to the ext HD ... you don't mean you tried to move the iTunes folder from:
YourUserAccount ~> Music ~> iTunes
Or did you simply just create a new folder on the iomega HD then add your music to it ??
