Firstly, I don't think you can boot a computer as old as that clamshell from an external device, so the solution in that respect is to replace the failed internal optical drive. I'm assuming it has the tray loading CD-ROM. Where you might find a replacement of that type and model of optical drive I cannot say, other than eBay, maybe other Mac forums.
