It sounds like your computer is experiencing a hard drive failure. Replacement is probably your only option. Before replacing the drive, I would try three things:
- Restart in Single User Mode. At the command prompt, type fsck -fy. This runs File System Check and allows a journaled files system to be repaired.
- Boot from the System Restore disc or distribution disc for a retail version of your OS. Launch Disk Utilities and run Disk First Aid.
- If you have AppleCare, then boot from the AppleCare disc and run TechTools Deluxe.
