The preceding lowercase "i" began with the first iMac when it wsa introduced in 1997. It was meant to be the "Internet Mac", hence the name. Since then, it's been used in the iPod, iBook, iLife, iTunes, iPhone, and everything else with Apple since it has become synonymous with it. While most of these products from Apple do have some tie in with the "internet," not all of them do (at least yet). The "i" could also refer to it focusing on "I, the person," which would make sense in regards to iLife, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iChat, etc. since these application help you focus on you and your lifestyle (movies, music, friends, etc.)
