gatorparrots is on a distinguished road
/private/etc = /etc
/etc is invisible in the Finder (it is listed in the /.hidden file that the Finder references).

If you want to view its contents in the Finder, simply choose Go->Go to Folder... (CMD+shift+G). and type /etc.
