You shouldn't be resting your hands there, unless you want to develop RSI (trust me, you don't). It's not your hands which hold the laptop there, it's the surface area and distribution of weight in the base (compared to the screen).

No particular benefit, given Apple's current design (I only bothered mentioning it at all, because in a VAIO I once owned, the speaker grills were placed exactly under the palms which muffled the sound a little and because with the keyboard at the front there would be a bit of spare room back there).

I didn't mean to suggest a plug on the keyboard. I was just saying that I don't care that much about a bigger speaker grill if the PB has optical audio out so I can connect to external speakers.

I'd be interested in knowing how much space it would be though - anyone got a 12" PB cross section or just an inside view?

I don't think a mouse (or whatever pointing device you choose to use) is that big a deal to take along (esp if was wireless and optical) in a laptop bag.
Plus, I think most laptop users opt to use an external pointing device, because trackpads suck and because they prefer to have more than one button (esp. with Expose).

Apple is doing a perfect job with their
current books (a mugger would have to pry my 15" PB out of my cold dead hands

), but I think they're going to need to get a G5 in there soon if they hope to stay competitive and that might mean finding a little extra space. Plus, I just hate trackpads
