update. Tried connecting MBP with a friends TBD with the same result. So I deduce that it is an issue with the laptop, not the display. Anyone know of a "script" or automator activity that may reboot the thunderbolt port after waking from sleep ? Seems a bit convoluted but if this at all possible it may solve the problem. For info I have replaced my optical bay with a SSD that is now the startup disc. Could it be that the system tries to look at the hard drive area first when it wakes up and not the SSD. Would swapping those drives around be a possible solution ? I don't want to swap them...

Have you moved your Downloads folder out of its original location? Replace the non-working Downloads icon by dragging the existing one out the dock. It will disappear in a "poof" Go to the normal location for the Downloads folder, which would be in your user/home folder, and drag that folder to your dock. A new icon will be created there. If you have, in fact, moved your original Downloads to another location - for example, the desktop, then you can still move the folder to the dock, to make a working icon there.

I can no longer open my Downloads folder by clicking on the Dock icon. When I tried to, a question mark (in bold type) appeared in front of the icon and the folder name that appeared had "17-19-06" added; ie, it said "Downloads 17-19-06" instead of just "Downloads". After two or three days of this, the Dock icon has now disappeared, with the aforementioned question mark appearing in its place. The same "Downloads 17-19-06" name appears when I hover the cursor near the question mark. In both cases I am still able to access the Downloads folder via Finder.

I'm experiencing two email oddities with my recently installed Snow Leopard: 1. "Mail Activity" consistently announces the arrival of twice the actual number of incoming emails; eg, 10 when there are only 5. I do have two registered email addresses, but then so I did before with Leopard, but without this hiccough. 2. "Mail Activity" announces from time to time the arrival of emails when none appear in any of the mailboxes; eg, the Inbox, Junk, or whatever. It seems to coincide sometimes with me transferring emails from one mailbox to another.

You might try iFFmpeg. It's not free though. Or possibly Mpeg Streamclip. Check your settings in Handbrake. Maybe you can improve the quality. I've never heard of MacX Mobile so don't know anything about it. Sorry. Edit: Just came from the Macupdate page for them. Did you read the reviews for MacX? I hope you didn't pay for it.

Yes. Galaxy usually supports MP4 and H264 video formats. I just have some camcorder video (m2ts format) and want to transfer them to galaxy.

I need to test the MBP with another TBD to see if it's A) The display (if its the display then Apple will repair once Ive bought the extended applecare) B) The cable ( I can get a new one) C) if it works fine on another display then its probably a laptop issue and thats something I may have to live with. I'll advise once Ive been able to do the test.

Don't know what format the Galaxy takes but would guess .mp4. Is that what you're converting to?

Thank you very much. I will rebuild Launch Services. I will use the preview.app to test images to see that they can be used as icons. You have been very helpful. I am closing the thread now.

Boot to the normal Recovery System (command-R), and erase your hard drive, using Disk Utility. Quit Disk Utility, which will return you to the recovery system menu, then continue with the OS X reinstall. I recommend that you use a wired network for best results. As I searched for your error (can't download additional components, etc), one thing that seems to help is to make sure there is 4 GB RAM installed, or less. Temporarily remove extra RAM, if you have more than 4GB installed. If you STILL get that same message, I also read that it is because of some problem with the hidden...

How do you usually convert video (like m2ts, mod, flv) to Galaxy supported formats? I tried Handbrake, but the video quality is barely satisfactory. Just found a freebie MacX Mobile Video Converter. But it seems to be new for me. Does anyone know how it works?

Hello I bought a used Imac (just over a year old). It is born with Lion which was on the machine when I got it. When I tried to install the machine again I started to erase the hard drive and insert my USB key with Mountain lion that I have used on my other Macs, to create a "Clean install". The problem comes at the error message I repeatedly get after a few minutes of installation. Note the computer is connected to the Internet, and I have tried both wired and wireless on several different networks. Error message: "Can not download the additional components needed to install Mac...

I think that you should keep in mind that a file is not an icon (except those files that have the file-type of .icns, which are standard Apple icon images) Searching out "how do I change a file's icon" will likely lead you in the right direction. But, from what I see, if you can use preview to open, or view your graphics file, be it a .jpg or .tif or whatever, then you should be able to copy the file's icon, and paste it in the icon section of the get info window - or dragging the file to the icon section, as you first mentioned, should work, too. SO - a good test is opening the file...

Plus as an old networking guy I have noticed so called smart people with the same problem. They buy & buy Gigabit switches but still use CAT5 cable. So check your cables and make sure they are CAT 6. For such a small network place I urge getting your CAT6 cable here Also remember if this the Ethernet cable is going by microwaves, refrigerators, etc. then use the shielded Ethernet cables around those devices.

Thank you DELTA MAC I now understand what was happening. Yes, I should have said it looks like the icon for preview.app. Yes, it sometimes displays other text such as TIFF or PNG as you said. What kind of file should I use so that the system will recognize it as an icon and therefore not display the generic icon with the text? Is there a document, book or such that explains those kind of details about behavior of the OS. I would like to start learning about those things.

Yes - using a Cisco gigabit switch. Pretty simple network - no other steps between me and the NAS. SMB definitely faster (once connected) but still disappointing compared to the old Tiger Mac-as-a-server, which felt pretty much like a directly connected drive. There must be something about Mac-to-Mac that is faster, or else something particularly slow about the Iomega. My friend who works in an all-Mac office reports pretty quick speeds with their Mac mini server. Including connecting remotely (though we use a VPN and they don't - that could be a bottleneck for remote connections I...

Came here through Google with the TM crashing Finder problem. I've just solved it by deleting the .bundle file from the TM directly (via Finder). Obviously this isn't the most ideal solution as you lose all previous backups but for me that isn't a concern. My system is currently good and I don't envisage needing to go 'back in time' from this point. I think that my particular problem was related to swapping hard-drives earlier in the year. I'm now using a thunderbolt SSD as my primary drive on my iMac, with the built-in drive acting as a data drive (photos, videos, work, etc). This swap...

I think I'll be going back to the MacPro or the MacMini at the next upgrade. Up to now, I had always had separate screens and computers. The current iMac is 2 1/2 years old and was supposed to last as long as needed. But the screen has died and I find that a replacement screen is almost as much as a new computer. Next time it will be a separate unit with as big and as cheap a screen as I can reasonbly fit into the room!!

(I wish I could explain this more clearly.) Your file (.jpg, .png, .bmp, .gif, .bmp, .doc, .txt, etc., etc.) is whatever it is. The icon for a particular file may not necessarily reflect what the file actually is. If there is no custom icon, or the system for some reason doesn't know what the icon is, it will display a generic icon, determined by the file's type. That guess is incorrect. The icon displayed is a generic icon used by the system to show (in this case) a .jpeg file, and is NOT the same as the Preview's app icon. A .tiff or a .png file will NOT have the letters JPEG, but...

I have restated my problem in response to the first reply in this thread. Yes, I understand that Using Command C is capturing/copying onto the clipboard and Command V is pasting from the clipboard. When you say "can also use a normal image", what do you mean? Do you mean a JPG or PNG file? Yes, these file types often work for me as icons. Thank you.

The attached images were not those I used in real use of my OSX system. The images attached to my posting were extracted from screen captures. I had trouble finding and capturing the real image examples. I think I understand your comments. Unfortunately I think I did not explain my problem correctly. When I try to change the displayed icon, it works perfectly for some attempts. That is: If I want to show an apple as the icon and I place the apple image onto the "GET INFO" screen I do get the picture of an apple as the icon. Often however if I place an image on the "GET INFO" screen;...
