Norton AntiVirus beta for osx

norton has released an AntiVirus beta for osx that is good for 30 days. anyone can use it, no prior purchase required. since virex is on my wish list right now, i'm getting this to tide me thru. You can too, at
macupdate or direct from symantec . personally i am po'd about the huge runaround i got when i wanted to purchase an upgrade to systemworks directly from their site without waiting for rebate (like windows users can with a click) but this is free and you too might want to try it. hard to imagine it's going to beat virex though.

un-installing beta1

OK, so NAV 8b2 comes with an UNINSTALLER for b1 ... I followed the instructions (dragged script to Terminal Window and entered my password). Terminal said I DONT have permission (I AM the Administrator). Help!?

[UPDATED ON 3/11/02: PLEASE READ MY POST (BELOW) REGARDING UPGRADING TO NAV 8.0 for OS X]

Did you make sure...

... that you navigated to /Application/Utilities like the Read Me asked you to? That might be the problem.

If not, then type "sudo " (with the last space) and THEN drag the file onto the terminal window. Then type your password at the prompts. That should basically give you root access, although if you don't feel comfortable doing this, I don't blame you.

Sounds like a permissions problem somehow.

I don't use virus scanners, I know not to download and run those porno site and email attachments.

Question I am wondering

We have version 7.02 and it works fine.

Why do we need to have another version of NAV now? Are they going to pull out the definition list support to 7 when 8 goes final?

not likely. i still get 6 updates now. i doubt i will lose those either. especially since norton charges for the subscriptions after one year. would be tough to tell someone you're not going to provide them with the product they paid for. at this point i don't expect i will renew anyway.

7 isn't osx native is it? that would be the biggest reason for 8 i think. I still think i would rather have virex so far. NAV seems much slower.

I have never used a virus scanner on a Mac and in 17 years I got one virus and that was 12 years ago. OS X is not fast enough yet, I don't need some utility sniffing through each file I open or save. That is one of the banes of Windows PCs is the absolute need to run a/v software. I admin about 60 PCs, all with McAfee or Norton AV software and it really really bogs down the P4s running at their 1.7ghz speed. Turn the stuff off and it is like a brand new speedy machine.
