G3 All In One - Why didn't IT sell?

It had the same specs as the iMac when it first came out, but this had more stuff... it wasn't as curvy... is that why it didn't sell as much as the iMac?

This mac was made for academic use. I think IT is more expensive 2 make. There is also the original MTVcomputer. It is the same Performa as on my avatar but it was painted in black and has an MTVlogo on it when you booted the machine. There were only made 500 of it and is was part of a contest for the MTVAWARDS. You must complete the sentence "Power is...". The winning answer in Belgium was "...knowing the sollution before the problem occurs."

IIRC, this Mac was only available for schools in the beginning...at least that's how I read the "history" article...

Is anyone as impressed as I am about Herve's reply?

Also, I do believe G3 all-in-one was discontinued shortly before or after the iMac was introduced, so it didn't have much time to sell itself, anyway. Might be interesting to see how rare these things are.

Note however, that the G3 all-in-one has TWO floppy drives, which I suppose makes up for the fact that the iMac didn't have one. ;-)

yes, there was a time when 2 floppies really came in handy. i ran a 2 floppy setup for about 10 years. notice istill have one. old habits die hard. not to mention all the old docs i need to access occasionally.

which reminds me, that's what I really miss about the PowerMacs: the ability to add a second internal, optical drive. As much as I appreciate my superdrive, when I was new to the Mac (my first Mac was already a PowerMac G4 450) I missed my two drive-solution from my PC. 1:1 CD-copying is something I still miss!
Though, I won't get another external drive just for that since my desktop is already full of three firewire drives.

Oh, one question, does anybody know a manufacturer who makes Firewire DVD-ROMs? I changed the region code on my superdrive for the fifth time, which means I am stuck at Region Code 1 (as I wanted it). When I want to rip Reg Code 2 DVDs (Europe), at the moment, I'm stuck. I get a iBook soon, but this still isn't a real option, because copying a DVD image over the ethernet isn't much fun.
So, is there an external drive I can set to RegCode 2 so I can rip what I want???

    thanx for any info
    Ulrik
