Hello Quark users. Abandon ship! ID2 spanks donkey. Can you say "transparency"? Or how about native Photoshop, Illustrator file import? Killer table tools, preflight, font gathering and PDF export too.

If you take some time, say a couple of hours to play with ID2, you will be a convert. Do it. Do it for your own good.

As I see it three major things are working for Adobe InDesign.

IMHO: Quark is a bunch of arrogant people. They over price their product because it's "specialized." Actually it looks more like a 1988 release of Mac Paint than a page layout program. You would think the money being spent would go towards a better GUI. Honestly, Quark goes slow sometimes anyway, the inception of a better GUI wouldn't hurt performance that much. Also, while sure it is specialized, it's still too much for a product that really hasn't changed since it's second release.

Students are now learning InDesign primarily and Quark on a tertiary level. Certain schools (colleges this is) are realizing that maybe, just maybe there is an alternative. Quark should take notice...

Compliant with 10, Quark still isn't, and doesn't look like it ever will be. (correct me if I'm wrong here!)

There is also the fact that everyone is tired of Quark's corporate attitude, and their support mentality of "well, it's your computer, never our software." Call tech support, you'll see what I mean.

Quark has a handle on the market, and they will forever be used, but I think it's high time for a change... (insert western wah waah wah music here)

Listen to mindbend when he recommends this product. I tried it out, and I'm hooked. Quark no longer resides on this press3 members computer.

I think InDesign 2 also looks great. Quark does overcharge for their software, but don't fool yourselves. Adobe will too, as soon as they become the standard in the industry or at least have a bigger market share. Then watch the gouging begin!

I'm not so sure we can expect the same, full throttle Quark-style gouging from ID. Photoshop is as dominant as Quark in its field and its upgrade path is very acceptable IMHO.

If you want to buy photoshop outright, you certainly have to empty your pockets. That wasn't the case a few years ago. Adobe will do the same with InDesign.

I also agree with twyg that Quark's interface need work badly. You'd thing a program for designers would have a nice design itself.

is not having 5.0 ready for OS X. It's just plain ridiculous. If they had to delay the release of 5.0 for a few months to get it carbonized, they should have done it.

I don't know anybody who is going to jump to 5.0 now. The Xpress 4.0 upgrade nightmare is still fresh in their minds, and they know better than to trust a Quark .0 product.

Also, Quark is now saying that the OS X upgrade will probably have a few more features and be a paid upgrade.

So let's tally it up, shall we?

Buy or upgrade to Xpress 5.0 now = $899, $299 upgrade.
Suffer through .0 headaches = many $$$ in lost productivity
Get Carbon update whenever Quark gets it finished =probably around $99-$199

or...

upgrade or buy Indesign 2.0 ($699 new, $99 upgrade)...

This is just another example of Quarks arrogance. Until now their customers just had to put up with it. Now they have a choice that is better in many regards to Quark's product.
