nummi - no version of icab i have used has ever expired in 30 days. their time period is considerably longer (like about 6 mos i think - too long in my opinion, i wish they would make more regular updates). perhaps you are thinking of Opera whose free with no banner deal lasts for 30 days.

as for paying for a browser - when one of these alternative browsers gets it all together and offers all the functionality i need to cruise the net without going to exploiter or netrape, then i will glady pay the $20 - $30 they want for it. there is a big price to be paid for 'free' browsers and it is a lot more than $30.

so far the new version seems good - having some Java is nice. but i hate that the clock stopped showing. now i have to navigate back to the finder to see what time it is. this is going to be a pain. Being able to surf and see the time at the same time was one of my favorite features of icab. beisdes its superior speed once you get your prefs tweaked right.

Is it your screen size or do you have a lot of menubar app thingies? Mine shows the time just fine and the only program I have a problem with is Project builder on 800 x 600.

well, i doubt it is my screen size. might be my resolution 800x600 with thousands of colors. i do have one extra menu app and that is a lttle icon that tells you whether 9 is running or not. i don't even remember what the name of it is so that i can disable it. Anybody else know? could it be part of tinkertool? I would much rather have my clock than to know if i have 9 running.

but thanks for letting me know it is something i should be able to solve instead of just living with it. i guess if worse comes to worse, i could up my resolution, but it just gets so small it is difficult to read for my old eyes.

i have been using the previous beta since around dec or before. there is no truth to that rumor about 30 day expiration - and it doesn't crash very often for me and i leave it up and running practically 24/7, only shutting it down for restarts. yes, it does crash on it's own at times, but very rarely as compared to the others i have tried leaving open this long.

get a real browser? puhleeeze

Ed, How can you use 800x600 with OS X? That must be awful .

Anyways iCab is alright it doesn't stack up with omniweb or mozilla though, and I still like chimera as well, but the feature set isn't there.

Its a nice little browser for what it does. I probably wont pay for it though, because it is not worth it for me.

Ed, that sounds like ClassicSpy.
Damn iCab has made my browser choice even harder! Now I gotta decide between three strong candidates (and IE ain't one of them).

genghis, i think you nailed it. now ijust have to figure out how to get rid of it and i don't see why you really have to decide between browsers. you can do what i do at times - run several. or at least a couple.

I have solved the clock problem for now. 1st i switched my resolution to 1024 x 768 and the clock came back along with classicspy. i spent an hour or so trying it like that, trying to convince myself that i could get used to it but i continuosly found the type to be too small. even when i got these forums where i could read them, i could barely see my replies as i typed them. and trying to read the menu bar and menus was rough. not to mention my icab toolbar. Granted it all looked nice, just too small. if anyone can explainto me how i get these things to be bigger in that resolution, i think i would switch. because the funny thing is - icab got even faster. it was almost instant from page to page. that would be too cool if i could only read the page then

so what i did was take the seconds display off my clock and it came back in 800 x 600. I really don't need seconds, but they are a nice thing to see every now and then. Like when some mozilla fanatic is screaming at you about fast page loads and you need to time it to show how icab compares and now i have my clock back - so i can pretend that i am going to do something else besides hang out here at a predetermined time
