iPod 20GB is the thickest???

I checked the Apple online store website and it states that the new iPod 20GB is the thickest! How comes? Didn't it should be as thin as iPod 10GB? It is even thicker than iPod 5GB!

The 20gb iPod is the thickest because it is actually just two of the 10gb pallettes, making it thicker. They made the 10gb thinner for some reason, and the 5gb stayed they same, presumably because they're just selling off their stock and then discontinuing.

On the new iPods, they replaced the scroll wheel with the new "trackpad like wheel"...

This makes the 10 gig thinner.

But, the 20 gig HD is actually fatter than the ten gig, and btw, I think its a 20 gig hd and not two 10 gigs...

What is the "trackpad like wheel" like? Do you mean that it doesn't spin around like in the original iPod?

I noticed that my cousins iPod jog wheel got kind of loose after awhile. Similiar to the scroll button on mice after prolonged use.

azosx: It's basically a trackpad like on laptops and stuff. You use it exactly the same way, except that it doesn't actually move.

It seems like it would be much nicer, because it's not as vulnerable to dirt/other stuff, and there are no moving parts, but the downsides are the same as for laptop trackpads: sweaty fingers, food, etc. on fingers can really affect the performance.

And yeah, I too noticed that the moving jogwheel gets loose after a while. Luckily my old iPod still worked perfectly despite that, and that's after about 9 months of use. I got mine replaced (for free, no less!) because it was starting to get 5 hour battery life instead of 10 hours. Apparently this is a known issue because Apple replaced my iPod free of charge. Now it's like it's brand new (because it is )!

That sounds a lot better than the jog wheel. I cover the trackpad in my PowerBook with a WriteRight palm screen protector to preserve it. I could probably cut one in a circle with a hole to preserve the new iPod.

Does anyone know what the differences are between the Mac and PC verison of the iPod? Is it just the FireWire adapter or are the firmware versions different as well?

Since you can use the Mac iPod on a PC already, if you couldn't use the PC iPod on the Mac, it doesn't seem like a very good buy if you use both machines.

From what I can tell, aside from the software the differences are minor.

1. The WIndows iPod has a is formatted in FAT32 format, the Mac is formatted in HFS+ - MacOS 9 could mount FAT32 HDDs, I have not heard about OSX, but I'd be surprised if it did not.
2. The Windows iPod connects to the desktop using a 4 pin firewire cable. This cable does not carry power, it only caries data. This was done because apparently, the slightly cheaper (and much less functional) 4 pin cable is standard on PC desktops and laptops (I remember reading about this with SONY's laptops.) This means that connectin the iPod to your desktop will not charge it. You have to use the power adapter.

In theory, you could buy a 6 pin firewire card for your windows machine and use a 6pin firewire cable on your PC. This (in theory) would allow you to charge the iPod from when connetced to the PC desktop.
