| iBooks still avalible to schools. ![]() This may not be much of a surprise to some, but I find it interesting that the iBooks are still available for schools to purchase. Yes, there's the Rosetta issue, and some programs may be incompatible, but even with emulation factored in, the iBooks aren't much faster. iBooks bought now will be out of date very soon, while the MacBooks will be compatible with virtually all new software. Schools on a tight budget that are looking at macs by be tempted by the iBook offer: $929 each in a 5-pack, vs. the MacBooks $1000 each in a 5-pack.

| I think its fair to say though that iBooks deployed in primary schools will have been beaten to a pulp long before they become really, truly "out-dated". The iBook still has a few useful years left provided you don't mind not being the fastest machine on the block. Its also clear that Apple keeps a lot more stock waiting in its distribution channels than you would expect.

| Schools can also still buy the eMac, even though the iMac for education came out. See this page: www.apple.com/education/emac Personally, I really love the iBooks, they're so great computers, even though the MacBook is new, is fast, has a camera built in etc. no Apple Laptop will ever be better than the iBook G4 or any version of it.

| I don't get it, MacBook is pretty much a new version of iBook... they look pretty much the same, it is hard to tell which is which from a distance, whereas you can separate it from PC-laptops easily... or am I missing something here?

| Well, you miss the "insides", of course. I also find this curious. The iBook clearly already _is_ outdated. Every MacBook beats any iBook on any test I know. I'm sure some software that isn't updated (i.e. not universal yet) might only be marginally faster on the MacBook, but still: 70$ per 'book doesn't seem like a good enough reason to buy into old tech. It's also not like the iBooks were more rugged or anything. It might simply be that Apple still _has_ a lot of iBooks and is trying to sell them that way. If I had the money, I'd probably buy an iBook 12" for nostalgy reasons only. They truly _were_ the best consumer notebook Apple's ever done. Before the MacBook came along, that is.
