| very few people buy Windows off the shelf, and MS knows that. Besides, whle it is more expensive than Mac OS, there is far longer between versions, so it evens out. What I don't like are companies like Dell who dont even give their customers a Windows install disc, but instead a restore disc which is just a disc image. This means you can never have a clean install, because dell slipstreams all sorts of crap with their installs. It also causes issues when trying to repair an installation because you cannot run the properwindows installer. i hope this trend changes with Vista |

| Yes, it is very annoying - at least Apple keep rubbish programs to the minimum. |

| You telling me people actually buy the retail version?? I just picked up to OEM copies of Ultimate for my MacBook Pro and self-built PC at home for $194 each. There's no restriction that I'm aware of. If they want to be technical and want me to peel the sticker off and place it on the machine that is fine, but for home use..there's no restrictions or concern about using OEM. When I replace drives or change setup, activation needs to be done over the phone, but I'd figure that's the same if you had retail as well. /shrug

| Microsoft's definition for who's allowed to buy and install OEM copies of Windows Vista: "an original equipment manufacturer, or an assembler, reassembler, or installer of software on computer systems" ... Come on, it's not _that_ difficult, really. They just don't give you nice boxes with the OEM license, and you _seriously_ can't give an OEM copy back after opening it. But as long as you're an "installer of software on computer systems", you're good to go.

| If you look at the thread title and the first post in the thread and then where you took the discussion, I'd say it very much *WOULD* have warranted its own thread. Also, it does _not_ belong in Apple News & Rumours if it's about buying Vista and should go to the Café instead. So I still stand by my previous notion. But it's happened now. However in the future, I'd like you not to hijack threads in this manner. Friendly reminder.

| If you're going to buy the OEM version of vista, you better hope you never replace your motherboard because you will most likely have to buy a new license. The OEM version doesn't allow you to replace your motherboard unless it was due to a failure. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070130-8730.html

| I haven't seen, say, a MacBook owner replace his motherboard without it failing. So: No problem here for us Mac users, I'd say. Same goes for iMac and Mac mini users. And I doubt Apple's going to start selling us upgrade motherboards for Mac Pros. So... Still no problem.

| Sorry, hope this isn't already posted here. This thread seems to have strayed onto Vista so here goes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6320865.stm Didn't take long, did it? If this is in the wrong place then I apologise, and wait for the mods to move me! Andy
