| I love Gibson's books - his work is partly responsible for getting me interested in computers, although as he readily admits he know little about them. The inspiration of the Apple II doesnt surprise me, really, his novels are more about where we are and where it might take us than where we could go in the future, they are studies in the changes wrought on society by technological advancement, and Apple do have a sociological effect, look at the iPod revolution.... As Gibson says of the Apple II, "I just thought if it's that small and that nicely styled, everything is changing." Like many tech novices (such as me when I first spread his book) its hardware that impressed him with future possibilites,that fed his imagination, not software, which by its nature is unlikely to impress you unless you already use the platform competently. |
