.Mac Webmail is down again...

Going to "http://webmail.mac.com" started giving this error a few minutes ago:

Quote:
Did not receive any response from application. It is possible that the application does not exist, or that the requested url is incorrect.
I'm on a trial and thinking about signing up, but I'm torn. Most of the services seem to be garbage or can be obtained elsewhere cheaper - it's just the only way I can CLEANLY/simply sync Calender, address book, and other stuff between my home and my work computer. <whine>I just don't want to pay $99 out of principle, it's way too much money to "allow" me to sync my two computers, especially when I've already paid a premium for the systems, monitor, OS, etc etc... </whine>

...Now "webmail.mac.com" doesn't answer anymore, and the link off of "www.mac.com" takes me to "www.mac.com/webobjects/webmail.woa...". Didn't do that earlier today, last week, etc.

If it was some problem with my ISP I wouldn't be getting a WebObjects error message directly back from Apple's web server, complaining about the application not responding.

It's working fine now if I click on the link from the .mac home page (which now sends me to a slightly DIFFERENT site that works), but I can't go there directly anymore...

webmail.mac.com has ALWAYS redirected to another address, a secured server connection to https://www.mac.com/WebObjects/iLogi...henticate=true (or something similar depending on a few things). It's been that way since .Mac was introduced.

Is working fine from my computers here, and same with the office computers 20 miles away on a different ISP. Make sure you don't have any 3rd party apps causing issues, or anyblock from your ISP.

You pay for the whole package, and it's up to you to decide if it's worth it or not. I normally (regular) only use the e-mail and homepage feature out of it, and it's fine by me. I do keep a few 'important' files on the iDisk incase I need access to them from somewhere, but other than that I don't mess with the other features.

I would say it's worth it. If you can afford to drop $100 on .Mac for a year, then decide at the end of that year that you don't want it, are you really going to miss the $100? If not, go for it. .Mac Backup is great for keeping my address book safe, as well as my iTunes libraries so I don't have to rebuild them if needed. Plus, the ability to back up gigabytes of data to a sparse disk image on a separate hard disk is great. And with a simple homepage that even my grandmother could navigate and the ability to seamlessly upload photos and movies makes .Mac well worth it for me.

Just FYI, a problem at your ISP's level could cause the WebObjects error you're seeing -- if your ISP has a connection problem for a moment or two while you're accessing .Mac webmail, your redirection session for webmail could timeout, causing certain error messages. We'll never know whether .Mac caused it or your ISP, but don't let that give you an image of what .Mac is like. I seldomly have a problem with .Mac, HomePage, my iDisk, my .Mac email or iSync.

.mac is worth the money. mail, sync, backup, idisk, homepage. I've never had a problem accessing any of it, even from windows boxes.
