i want to be able to record cable input on my new imac. this limits me to a firewire or USB option. i would assume firewire is the way to go-- but i need more info regarding software, encoding, etc. can anyone help me out?

I am not sure that can even be done. You have no input ports. You do have a video out which requires a VGA display adapter. There is support for video mirroring.
If you really want to record something from a cable station, you will need to get a DVD-R. I do believe that Panasonic does makes one.

well, it doesn't necessarily have to be cable, it could be VGA input. that ATI thing looks intruiging... i wonder what format it encodes in.
also, has anyone had any experience with this: http://www.elgato.com/eyeTV/index.html ?
