does any out there know if there are any other os x compatible external modems other than the Apple USB modem?

Most USB modems will work, except for the "WinModem" branded ones, which use software running on Windows to actually do most of their work (and suck anyway).

If you look in the /Library/Modem scripts folder on your hard drive - you'll find a long list of supplied modem connection scripts for specific modems. Zoom brand is likely the easiest to find, depending on which country you are in.
Does the Apple external USB modem not work for you? That would probably be the cheapest solution.
