Bill Bryson's book 'Made in America (http://www.amazon.com/Made-America-Bill-Bryson/dp/0380713810/ref=pd_bbs_3/104-3381343-2455118?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191260144&sr=8-3)' explains that many 'English' words used day to day in Britain are originally American.

The English gave America its language, but America has garnished it with some wonderful words.

'Gray' makes more phonetic sense.

I usually go for the abstracts. The less in-your-face, the better...

I also enjoy some flora macrophotography for my backgrounds.

Very nice ones nixgeek.
I usually have similar ones, this (http://flickr.com/photos/zisa/406096057/) I've had for a long time, trying to keep it cleaner... & some more tagged with desktop (http://flickr.com/photos/zisa/tags/desktop) and screenshot (http://flickr.com/photos/zisa/tags/screenshot/). Hehe, thanks. :D

And I don't blame you for using the ones from OS X on a Windows PC. Most of the pictures in Windows are just blah. About the only Windows that has some nice backgrounds is Vista (but that's about the ONLY thing good about Vista :p).

Actually, you're quite right about how it looks on the Mac. Even the Mac can make Vista's wallpapers look better. :p

According to my college dictionary it is 'gray' from Mid.Eng.; Old Eng. 'grag' which came from Greek 'grau'. Grey is just another spelling of gray.

I always understood that grey (gray) was the preferred background for graphic designers, as colourful styles distracted the designer from any work she or he was doing.

I prefer at least some color abstraction because, when working in black and white or grayscale, a gray background can become a source of misleading contrast.

Sorry, just a touch late, but I was referring images, IE pieces of artwork. I dislike working against a solid color; I've found that any shade, if constant, can skew my interpretation of my work. I tend to use pictures that have a good range of color, but that are not intense and easily fall into the background (I don't like backgrounds with a lot of blue).

I agree with you about the blue. For reasons I don't understand, I keep gravitating to the image below.

Space, the final frontier. I cycle through a series of Hubble photos.

But the contents of the untitled folder are usually spread around.

Sadly no. I used to play piano, but if I had to do it for a living today I'd starve to death within three days.

At least for my Mac Pro, I prefer a simple gray/grey background as well.

Picture is what the Jaguar XF should have looked like. They botched it from the original sketches, which were brilliant.
