Which is the best way to determine the names of the installed applications in Mac. One possibility is to iterate thru the applications directory, but are there other methods of doing this?
Is there any file which holds the names of all installed files?

System Profiler:
Click About This Mac beneath the Apple menu.
Click the More Info... button.
There is no Step 3.

Cool... this means that there is a single place from where this can be known.
Any ideas how this can be done programatically in cocoa.

Heh... well, other than "Click on 'Applications' in the left-hand sidebar under 'Software'"... ;)

One can use both hand to launch System Profiler easier. Just hold down the 'option' key' while clicking on the top left Apple symbol and will ask one to launch System Profiler (/Applications/Utilities/System Profiler) directly.

Oh the joys of poorly documented modifier effects! I didn't know this one. :)
