a co worker of mine needs to dual windows on his imac. Can he use an external drive or does he have to partition the drive in his imac.

Well he could use a product like VMWare's Mac Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/) and throw the install when running the program on an external, with a little tweaking using Alias's to fool the program.

No need for aliases or anything... VMWare's Fusion, Parallels, and VirtualBox all allow you to run virtual machines that are stored anywhere -- on an external drive, on a network share, etc.
Boot Camp can only be used to partition and install Windows on your Mac OS X startup disk -- you cannot use Boot Camp to install Windows on an external drive.
