connecting Macs to a network

I need to connect several different macs to a school network server to run Accelerated Reader. Some of the Macs are connected, but some don't seem to recognize the network at all. We are using TCP/IP, with Appletalk turned off. What should I try now? Thanks.

You'll need to explain in greater detail what, precisely, is working and what is not.

What does this mean? Do they get valid IP addresses? Can they access the internet? Can they "see" other machines on the network? Do the lights on the router/switch indicate connectivity when you plug in the ethernet cords?

Hi, thanks for your interest.

I am having trouble with several different Macs connecting to our local ethernet network. The oldest Mac having trouble is a 5400/180 with OS 8.0. Our network doesn't recognize AppleTalk so I'm using TCP/IP. All the settings seem correct, but I can't get it to see any part of the network. I think it may have to do with old or incorrect preferences somewhere.

Other Macs are newer (OS 9.2, 10, etc.) but having basically the same problem. I'm beginning to think the glitch is in the network itself. I'll be glad to try any other ideas.
