Sharing Internet from iMac to Linux box via Ethernet

Alright. I just installed linux on my old G3 B&W. I am really far away from the DSL router so i connect to it on my iMac using an Air Port card.

i was playing around in my sharing preferences and remembered seeing that you could share you internet over Ethernet or Phone line. so i turned it on but nothing is happening on the linux side of things.

As of right now, i only have a standard Cat 5 patch cable, and i know i probably need a crossover but for now is there any to get the linux box using the internet form my imac (or at least the ability to set up a P2P net work between them?)

Anyone remember if it's only the Apple portables that have the auto-switching Ethernet ports?

Anyway, you probably need to do one of two things: either the network settings on the Linux box need to be identical to those on the Mac, OR you need to set up the Linux computer as if the iMac was nothing more than a bridge to the Airport base or router, depending on if the Airport base is in bridging mode. I'm not sure which, so hopefully someone else can clarify :)

well, it's not an airport base... it's a 2wire DSL router that has built in 802.11b

(and that is what i was wondering too... if linux needed the crossover cable or not...)

Well, I know the iBooks and Powerbooks have a special port which detects if the cable is/needs to be crossover or not, and changes the set up to 'make' it whatever is needed. I don't remember if the iMacs have that though
