Almost similar to Advance Wars on the Nintendo Gameboy Advance.
It's a turn based war strategy where you have different maps/boards to create troops and capture cities. It is almost like an extensive chess game. Anyone know of something similar?

Umm, how about "fantasy role-playing games"?
Realmz (for Mac OS 9 or classic)
Battle for Wesnoth
Blades of Avernum <- I like this one
I don't know of any turn-based games that feature modern warfare like tanks and stuff.

That Blades of Avernum looks pretty cool. I might try it out, thanks.

Risk is the classic. Command & Generals maybe?

If you like Risk, check this out:

I was thinking of getting this game. Risk was always fun and this one allows you to create custom fighting maps. And network play.
