Happy St. Patricks Day!

I was looking over my Blog this morning and noticed that there was a funky design in the Google ads I had there. It took me about two or three minutes to realize... they're clovers! GREEN CLOVERS?!

IT'S ST. PATRICKS DAY! Hope everybody has a good one! Remember to wear green and pinch anybody who's not! I'll be sure to get in a few good pinches here and there. I think I'll take the lady of the house out tonight, or something.

Does anybody do anything special on this strangest of holidays? Do share!

A lot of people are not going to like what I have to say about St Patrick's Day. If you are of a sensitive nature, switch threads now.

My wife is Irish-American. I lived in the Republic of Ireland for four years and my admiration for the Irish knows no bounds (the Welsh have always historically looked up to the Irish).

The Catholic Church made St Patrick’s day an important date in the religious calendar. Good Catholics would be expected to attend Mass on this religious holiday. The Irish government also made the day a public holiday, which has raised the importance of St Patrick far above what the church could have achieved.

What I feel uncomfortable about is the way the beer companies have hijacked St Patrick’s day as a marketing tool to sell its products. Nearly every bar and pub in Britain has posters advertising St Patrick’s Day (in other words come down the boozer and get pissed). The rest of the year, the British largely ignore Ireland.

And it’s happening worldwide. Why else would the citizens of México City go out of their way to celebrate am Irish patron saint unless it was because they wanted to get drunk and enjoy the ‘craic’.

At least the US still celebrates St Patrick’s Day for good reasons.

I'm starting to get strong feelings for this holiday, and I must say... it's interesting to find out how many people dislike this holiday.

Yesterday I was talking with a friends, all of whome dispise anybody who wears green on this day. Why? Because their great (and I mean GREAT) ancestors were killed by Irish.

Drink green, turn green, puke green! (In the States, they sell green dyed beer during St. Patrick's day. Really disgusting!)

Trip. They may have politicial or historical gripes. I don't have these. My gripe is with the beer companies. And this coming from a beer drinker.

Huh? Seems like it's all about beer here, too. We have a big ol' parade here in New York, but still, when I think of St. Patrick's day, I think of everyone getting drunk.

I just realized that I don't have any green clothing. Egad! I do have a green hooded coat, but I think it's a bit too warm and sunny out for that today.
