Since everything balances out, my guess is the world will just fester on in mediocrity.

It sounds like the social equivalent of an entropic death. :7)

When people talk about the end of the universe (entropic death) I always think of R. Frost's poem Fire and Ice, though there is no direct connection:

Some say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Some would argue that the only way to save the world is to destroy it. But I don't really worry about it. That decision will ultimately be made by the army of superintelligent computers I help create, anyway. I trust their judgement.
