September 11th

September 11, 1973.

The democratic government of Salvador Allende is torn down, and Augusto Pinochet starts his dictature.

That day the military airplanes bombed the presidential palace with an impressive precision. In the following terror thousands of people died (were killed). Many other simply disappeared, became "desaparecidos". In all the country concentration camps and torture roooms were built, and public execution became common. The dead became buried in mineral caves and in graves (?) without the stone. For seventeen years, the Chilean people lived in the fear that someone would come to knock their door at midnight, with the fear of becoming one day "desaparecidos", being suddenly arrested and horribly tortured.

Still today the guilty are free and have not been made pay for what they have done.

Commemorative 11th September.

What happened on an other September 11th you all know.

more about Pinochet.

Those who don't learn from history...

I notice many parallels between that 9/11 and the "current" 9/11.

toast will become famous soon enough
Tomorrow, 16 Russian boys will die in prison because Putin decided not to provide more than 4.5 Kcal food to Siberian prisoners.
Tomorrow, the world will still don't give a f*ck about Chechnya.
Tomorrow, Germany and France will still allow themselves to increase their deficit, breaking European rules, not showing new European countries the good way to go.
Tomorrow, a buch of peasants will be shot right thru the head by FARC narcotroopers, because they need to 'maintain terror on their territory'.
Tomorrow, the same Kalachnikov Allende used to commit suicide will still be in use in more than 70% of the Earth.
Tomorrow, a dozen thousands landmines will still be produced in America.

But today can be a sad day too, if you like.
Peace to all people who lost someone in the Twins. And peace to the others I mentioned above, no one is mourning for them: Russian people, Columbian slaves, Chechnyans, victims of madeinus landmines, and the lot.

PREFACE: I'm an ignorant Ameriacn, so I'm a bit biased here...

While all those things you listed ARE terrible and cause for sadness, they are (for the most part) doing these things to themselves...
the twin towers in NYC was an outside attack.

***I'm not trying to argue with you, Toast. I don't believe you're trivializing the NYC 9/11 attacks. I'm just adding my 2 cents.

Hope my remarks don't offend.

Quiksan, I think you need a refund on your 2¢. These people are hardly victimizing themselves, if that's where you're going with that. True, they may be doing it to their own people, but it's still not something to disregard as self-inflicted.

This was not an ignorant statement at all, quicksan. Many historians and philosophers are discussing the way civil wars and internal conflicts (incl. terrorism, thus) will be the next century's plague, after world wars have been the 20th century's one.

PS: your avatar reminds me of another member, strange. Kendall ?
