How much is my osx partition protected

Can i use an old recovery disk to install vista? the disk will format then install

is this only formatting the partition or the whole disk?

Windows can NOT natively read OS X HFS+ hard disks. To make Windows SEE OS X HFS+ disk read HOWTO] Make Windows see HFS+ formatted drives.
