Installation of XP refusing to continue

I have 3 partitions (Macintosh, Vista and Linux). I recently installed XP over the Vista partition, and so I did by inserting the XP CD and loading the XP setup from boot up. When I came to the 'formatting partition' menu I chose NTFS (quick). Now when it restarted my pc I saw XP, along with the other OS, in the boot menu and selected it, to continue with the second part of the installation. The XP logo showed and it was going well then all of a sudden, it went to a blue screen saying 'UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME'. I loaded the XP setup again and instead of choosing NTFS (quick), like last time, tried the other formatting partition options, but now when I load XP in the boot menu, it doesn't even show the XP logo, but shows a black screen saying 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.' Why is it doing this? Here are two screenshots of the errors:
