RAIDed Time Machine Volume -- Good Idea?

I have a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.
I would like to do the following, and am wondering if this is a good idea...

I have a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.
I would like to do the following, and am wondering if this is a good idea...

2GB Internal Drive = Operating System
and...
2GB Internal Drive + 2GB Internal Drive (Striped RAID) = 4GB = Time Machine.

(This is a total of three drives, one containing the OS, and the other two being RAIDed together into one 4GB drive for Time Machine.)

My question is this: If my OS drive were to fail completely and I had to replace it, would I be able to restore to a new replacement drive from the 4GB Time Machine backup, or would the OS, once it is reinstalled on the new replacement drive, not see the other two drives as a single volume containing my Time Machine backup?

Forgive the question if it seems like I have no idea how RAID actually works at a low level. I don't. Is the information that tells the OS that the RAID set is, in fact, a RAID set stored on the OS volume and will it basically be lost if that volume dies? I hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks for your help. I don't want to buy three 2GB drives before I know, for sure, that this will actually work for restoring if I were to lose the main volume. If this won't work... I need to figure something else out.

Hi everyone

At present, I have all of my documents running off a USB drive, which I carry between work and home. Since I have a number of folders on here that I need to access frequently, it would be very helpful for me to "bookmark" these folders so they appear in the Places section of the Sidebar.

I have tried doing this by dragging the folder over to the sidebar. It appears to create a shortcut there, but the problem is that, the next day when I load up the computer and reconnect the drive, some or all of the folders are missing.

I'm not sure why this happens, but is there any way to make the OS remember the folders I have dragged to the places folder and load those up as soon as I connect the drive? I am able to do this in Ubuntu Linux (it does it automatically)

Many Thanks!

PS - I'm using a new MacBook Pro and iMac, both with Snow Leopard

Good External for Time Machine

Quick Question: I just purchased a 500gb Seagate External (the plastic one) at OfficeMax, and upon checking out, noticed that it is "compatible with Windows Vista, EP." Okay. But no mention of the Mac. The salesperson said, "oh, yeah, it will just ask you if you want to format for the Mac, blah blah blah," so I got home and googled the hard drive. Arrggh.

So, here's the question: I want to get something that is 1)at least 500gb and 2) around $85-100 to use with Time Machine, soon to upgrade to Snow leopard. Is this okay...will it be okay...or should I just go for the 1TB Seagate Free-whatver for $109 (This was 85)....both are 7200 RPM.

Is Hitachi worth looking at?

The whole reason for this is I have a LACIE 320GB that has died. What happens is that it will back up. Work fine...as long as the computer doesn't go to sleep. If it does, I can reformat the drive, then back up again....and it all appears to work fine...until we go to sleep again....then, I have to reformat because the drive won't mount. So, that sort of defeats the purpose.

Any suggestions regarding the brand and price would be great. Office Max is sort of a req as I have $20 discount for it.
Thanks again.

I have just purchased a new iMac and have an old HP 940c printer which I am going to give to my son and am in the market for a new printer. It is like jumping in the ocean and trying to count the fish. I want an inkjet printer and will be using it for home use but want good quality text and photo prints with reasonably fast speed (not sure I need much fancy stuff or fax etc). I have been happy with HP in the past but it is my only experience. Using Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I would be interested in some of your recommendations or warnings in the ocean of printers.

I've had the same Acomdata external hard drive for 5 years now (a 250gig) and recently I wanted to clear some of the files I don't feel I need to keep. While the drive was plugged in, I trashed some files and tried to empty the bin. Immediately it started to calculate how many files it was dumping. I probably had a couple hundred files in there, but as it was calculating, the number would not stop rising, and reached the thousands. I let it go for a bit, and finally canceled it, for fear for some reason that it was planning on just wiping the whole drive (maybe this fear has no merit).

In the bin there is a random assortment of files, music, pics, docs, etc, and two Recovered Files folders. I went ahead and took everything out of the trash except for one document (by dragging the stuff to back to the external) and then tried to empty the trash again. With one file in the bin, the same error occurred (counting the files to trash into the thousands).

Anyone know what the hell is going on?
Thanks!
