macosx.com FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

Forum Rules & Governing Policy

The Ten Rules That Start With No:

No Vulgarities or Profanity

Yea! You can't use words like: $@%$#*, &%*$@!@#, or %$(%#@$%. Try alternative colorful phrases like: "Merciful heavens she sure is acting like a nincompoop," "Golly gee, I wish he hadn't said that about my mother." or "Oh heck! Am I having a bad day."

No Copyright Material

You can quote up to 500 words from any source without citing where you got the quote. There are gray areas on sources you reference, but one thing macosx.com does not approve of is copying entire articles from subscription based newsletters. If you post a news story, you need to include a link back to the source.

No W@r3z

No asking for serialz, hackz, or warez, linking to them, discussing or anything related, including MP3z, Pr0n and related piracy items.

No Ads for Other Websites Unless Authorized

Don't register an account and expect to promote your new site on this site. Permission may be granted and has in the past. Ask before doing so.

No Links to Immoral Sites

If the site asks folks if they're 18 or 21 or gets the no-no from Net Nanny, then you might want to refrain from posting the link.

No Spamming

Don't just repeatedly post information. Don't just repeatedly post information. Don't just repeatedly post information. Don't just repeatedly post information.

No Slandering the Character of a Board Participant

Even if they are mentally retarded and were probably abused by their parents, you shouldn't be compounding their difficulties by publicly airing their personal problems. Everyone has the right to disagree with any other board member, however, the disagreements should focus on the issue and not person issues.

No Holy Wars - The Operating System and Hardware Type

Each operating system has it's high points and low points. Making comments or responding to comments which degrade operating systems and hardware platforms in a blatant childish manner (i.e. Mac's Suck) is grounds for immediate termination. Questions related to choosing the right operating system or constructive comments meant to teach or explain are okay.

No Selling of Products

Things like: drugs, military secrets, nuclear components, and human souls are definitely frowned on. Computers & equipment are okay in the Classifieds forum. When buying anything, you need to know and trust the person you're dealing with.

No Posting of Arguments from other Boards

We have enough quarrels here. We don't need to import them from other message boards.

Types of Posters We'd Like To Discourage

Drama Queen:

Like all message boards, there is always a constant turnover in the number of people that frequent our site. Most people, after having decided they no longer wish to visit the board, make no announcement about their departure. Some individuals have a penchant for making long boisterous departures from the message board that is clearly worthy of an Emmy award"Goodbye cruel message board" is the classic remark. Because most of them seek to harm the morale of the board, Drama Queens are regarded as a nuisance. What also makes them an even greater pain is their tendency to repeatedly coming back for a series encore performances. "I came back to see if you people changed your ways, but I see things are the same as alwaysso once again, farewell cruel message board."

Trolls:

This type of person has the tendency to visit message boards for the sole purpose of complaining or saying things that cause other members to get up into a frenzy. These type of posts are usually off-topic anyhow and they lead to nothing productive, so please just don't be a Troll or see yourself Trolled out of here.

Rivals:

Some individuals believe their day is not complete without a "my computer is better than your computer" post. In fact, most of our days would be complete without these posts. So, we are happy you think your computer is better, so tell your computer, not us.
