Another advantage of the iMac over PowerMac

    From www.apple.com/imac/superdrive.html :

The awesome new SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) reads DVD titles at 6x (7.8 megabytes per second), and writes to 4.7-gigabyte DVD-R discs at 2x (2.6 megabytes per second). The SuperDrive also reads CDs at 24x, writes to CD-R at 8x, and writes to CD-RW at 8x.

    From www.apple.com/powermac/ :

Power Mac G4 models with the SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) have everything you need to record your own DVD-Video discs for playback on most standard DVD players. The SuperDrive reads DVD titles at 4x (5.4 megabytes per second), and writes to 4.7-gigabyte DVD-R discs at 2x (2.7 megabytes per second). The SuperDrive also reads CDs at 24x, writes to CD-R at 8x and writes to CD-RW at 4x.

Interesting, eh? I expect the PMG4 to be updated with the new SuperDrives though. However, reading DVDs at 6x is a welcome upgrade, as well as rewriting at full 8x speed.

(Note: Sorry if I put these in the wrong forum. I didn't realize there was an iMac forum.)

    Is yummy

I also have to say that the current PowerMac superdrive is one of the best optical drives I know. It reads even heavily scratched CDs and DVDs with a fabulous speed! ANd since the iMac superdrive is actually from the same company (Pioneer) and uses the same technical base, it will have the same quality. It also is incredible "burn-proof", even under classic. Till now, NO buffer underrun, regardless of what I did while i was burning. I love it.
