Problems with Lacie d2 DL DVD+-RW and iTunes

I'm using iTunes 4.9 and a new external firewire Lacie d2 DL DVD+-RW drive. I have no problems burning DVDs. However, I am finding when I import songs from CDs, all my songs have a popping sound on them. This problem goes away when I turn on error correction, but then ripping songs is slower than from my internal matshita DVD drive in my imac g5. The songs rip fine without error correction from the internal drive. Any suggestions? I have the latest firmware installed.
