Imac Does Not Recognize Sony Camera

I just bought a SONY DCR-DVD-7 video camera which was supposed to be compatible with my imac. I cannot even get the mac to recognize the camera when I hook it up. I get a message that says: The disk you inserted is not recognize by Mac. What worries me is that I don't even see a camera icon on my desktop. It doesn't even register in the system profiler. The disk is a mini DVD-R. Which plays just fine in my DVD player.
