external dvd player error -17002

I try to use an external (Firewire) DVD-Player,
when i start Apples DVD Player i get a -17002 error.

It recognizes CDs but no DVDs, i installed the DVD Player 4.6 software with pacifist and run MacOS 10.4.2.

Any ideas?
