Hooking up Parallel Printer to G5

Anyone have any recommendations whether I should go with the parallel to usb converter or just get a parallel card. This printer is now discontinued by HP and it appears that only windows drivers existed. What are the chances this printer will work with OS 10.3.9?

try here . goto the supported printers link and if it is here, then it may work. if not, then chances are it would be a waste of time trying to get it to work. and there are not parallel interface cards for macs as far as i know, so it would have to be a usb adaptor.

HP non-postscript printers are supported by the combination of ESP ghostscript (the driver) and hpijs (the PPD interpreter) from here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/

(Notice that Gimp-Print has only a few HP models. And don't forget that Gimp-Print is already installed on Panther and Tiger.

I recommend a cheap ethernet-parallel print server, and second choice is a USB-parallel adapter. On eBay you can get an HP JetDirect EX print server for $30.
Good luck.

So I made it this far, they want me to set up the linex enviroment first before installing the hpijs drivers. http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/install.php#setup_env

Quote:
Installing the HPLIP backend and setting up the HP printing software is a three step process.

* Step 1: Set up the Linux environment
* Step 2: Download and install the HP printing software
* Step 3: Add the printer
But as far as I know, anything I install using a linux os won't be accesible when booted as a mac. This makes no sense to me. It appears that I may be better off buying a new PC for $300 to hook this printer up to!

OS X 10.3.9 + HP LaserJet 1100

Whoa,
Good thing you didn't keep going - I didn't expect you to go the source code route!
Go back to that linuxprinting/macosx site, to the hpijs driver page, and download the normal Mac installers in ".dmg" files. (both hpijs and ESP ghostscript are needed)
