G5 digital Audio input-output tiger

new logitech 5500 speakers.. great item.
dvd player outputs digital audio.
PS2 direct to speakers work fine.
when I try to run optical in and pass through the G5 1.8dp nothing comes out.
sound preference panel shows digital coming into the computer... bars moving in sound meter area.
tried w/ garage band on too.
about this mac shows this.

passthrough no --- problem???

tried the audio midi w/ digital input but up top only allows built in audio.
can't can't multi channel setup either
while below allows me to select digital input and output but
nothing happens.
searchs on forum haven't produced much. frustrated.

a simple software solution it seems.
don't know why it doesn't work straight up but this works
