Have you tried checking in System Profiler? It should give you all the information you need about what's supported by the DVD drive.

my question is, what formats does it support?
i have bought my mac in europe, so the PAL format is boligatory, but how about NTSC and SECAM formats - do you know?

Actually, PAL seems to be able to play NTSC - but not the other way around.
Not sure why, but you might have luck with NTSC disks...
