camcorder compatability

I received a Sony DVD Handycam for Christmas and I'm horrified to discover that I cannot hook it up to my G5 iMac and use iMovie and iDVD - is there any way that I can get my iMac to recognize this camera? if not, why? Can you suggest which DVD camcorders you CAN use with my beloved Macintosh computer?

Thank you so much

MisterMe will become famous soon enough
Remove the DVD from your camcorder. Stick it into your optical disc drive. Wait until DVD Player launches. Watch the DVD.
