Pioneer DVR 109 won't play CD's?

I just installed a Pioneer DVR 109 DVD-R/RW drive in a G4 AGP tower, Mac OS X 10.3.9. It replaces the Apple branded DVD-ROM drive.

I read the past questions here, applied Patchburner 3, and the drive is now recognised. System Profiler says 'Vendor supported'. It plays back DVD video just fine, excellently in fact. But it won't recognise any CD-ROM I put in there, even Apple system discs. Just clunks, whirrs and ejects.

Any ideas why this is happening, or what I can do to fix it?
